Dr. Tom Tooma, California LASIK, TLC
A Letter to My Patients
From Thomas S. Tooma, M.D.
Medical Director, Southern California
After finishing my ophthalmology residency training in 1983, I decided to sub specialize in corneal
transplantation surgery and refractive surgery. It was very rewarding to restore vision to thousands of
patients who needed corneal transplantation or complex vision restoring procedures. I taught many
physicians and ophthalmology residents these complex procedures. It was not until 1994 that I decided
to limit my career to Laser Vision Correction. No other procedure in the practice of ophthalmology has
such a profound effect on an individual’s quality of life as laser vision correction has. Patients are so
excited with the sense of freedom from the dependence on glasses and contact lenses.
I became a principal investigator in the field of Laser Vision Correction in 1993/1994. I helped several excimer laser manufacturers obtain
FDA approvals for their lasers in the U.S. Based on my experience as a principal investigator, I have chosen the four lasers that I believe
give my patients the best possible chance of getting 20/20 or better vision and the best quality of vision. I will choose the laser that I consider
most suited for you.
After performing more than 60,000 primary LASIK procedures, I do sincerely believe that laser vision correction in our center is the safest
it can be. That fact, combined with the latest technology, provides us with the greatest chance of providing our patients the highest
probability of achieving 20/20 or better vision, safely.
I was the first in California to perform LASIK surgery and the first to perform Custom Wavefront Guided LASIK. In fact, I have performed
more CustomLASIK procedures with the Alcon LadarVision laser than any surgeon in the world. The advantage of the CustomLASIK
procedure is better quality of vision overall, especially at night.
I was the first in the world to use the Femtosecond Laser (IntraLase FS30). Using the IntraLase laser rather than the blade (microkeratome)
makes the procedure safer and more precise, and increases the chance of 20/20 or better vision.
In 1999 I decided to partner with the largest provider of laser vision correction in the world, TLC Laser Eye Centers, Inc. This partnership has
enabled me to provide my patients with a Lifetime Commitment. If you as a patient need an enhancement surgery in the future, you may have
that completed at any one of more than 70 TLC centers throughout the United States for life, for no additional fee.
I thank God for being blessed with the opportunity and the skill to enhance the life of so many people and to restore their sight. I feel
privileged to have the trust and confidence of so many patients and doctors to allow me to perform this life changing surgical procedure
on their most precious sense of all-their sight.
I look forward to meeting you and performing your vision correction procedure.
Sincerely,
Tom Tooma
